Nature Drawing and Design Plate XI - 1/4 - Setting Up and Beginning the Copy
In the atelier today, I begin a master copy of an Art Nouveau plate from Nature Drawing and Design. During 1 video session (53 minutes), I set up my reference and workspace, draw a custom grid over the original design, and replicate it on my paper using geometric construction—laying the foundation for an accurate copy.

Project Information
Plate XI from Nature Drawing and Design
This master copy is based on Plate XI from Nature Drawing and Design, a 1903 book by Frank Steeley.
The plate features a naturalistic study of the crocus, with geometrical construction and detailed drawings of its parts from different angles.
You’ll find the reference here if you’d like to follow along. You can also download the complete book as a PDF.
Sit with me as I continue and complete the inking of Plate XI from Nature Drawing and Design. During 5 video sessions (2h51 total), I work through the different elements of the design—starting with warmups, inking the smaller flowers, then moving on to the main flower and final details to finish the plate.
